Gaza Death Toll Surpasses 75,000 with Health System on Brink of Collapse
February 19, 2026
The death toll in Gaza has exceeded 75,000 violent deaths by January 2025, according to independent studies published in top medical journals. This figure is 34.7% higher than official Palestinian Ministry of Health reports. The Gaza Mortality Survey (GMS) interviewed nearly 2,000 households and confirmed that about 3.4% of Gaza's pre-war population has died violently since October 7, 2023.
Despite Israel questioning these numbers, an Israeli army official acknowledged around 70,000 deaths earlier this year. Women, children, and elderly form 56.2% of the casualties, consistent with Palestinian data.
The survey also found 16,300 non-violent deaths linked to worsening living conditions and medical collapse due to the blockade. The destruction of hospitals and health infrastructure has made tracking deaths difficult, with many bodies still unrecovered.
The health system’s collapse is severe. Only 12 of Gaza's 36 hospitals remain functional for more than basic emergency care, with hospital beds halved from 3,000 to about 2,000.
A study led by Duke University and Gaza’s al-Shifa Hospital estimates 116,020 injuries by April 2025. Between 29,000 and 46,000 of these need complex reconstructive surgery. Gaza had just eight plastic surgeons before the war, and now surgical capacity is near zero. Experts say it may take ten years to clear this surgical backlog even if capacity is fully restored.
The destruction also includes specialized surgery ability like microsurgery, critical for severe burn and blast injuries caused by incendiary weapons. Without urgent care, many will face permanent disabilities.
Researchers warn of a ‘grey zone’ where deaths from later complications blur the true toll. Conditions have worsened with forced evacuations wiping out over 80% of Gaza, and famine declared in parts of the region.
This comprehensive scientific work calls for ending attacks on civilians and medical infrastructure, stressing that only peace can prevent further death and ongoing health disasters in Gaza.
