Indian Grey Hornbill Chosen as Bird of Tirupattur with 41,243 Votes

The Indian Grey Hornbill has been named the Bird of Tirupattur, winning 41,243 votes in a public poll held by the Forest Department. The poll attracted over 1.04 lakh votes as part of a month-long drive to raise awareness about wildlife conservation among youngsters. M. Babu, Forest Range Officer at Ambur, said, "The idea is to create awareness about biodiversity conservation and forest protection among youngsters, including students." Seven birds were listed for voting: Indian Grey Hornbill, Indian Eagle Owl, Black-winged Kite, Black-winged Stilt, Lesser Whistling Duck, Red Avadavat, and Pied Kingfisher. Voting was open both online via the Forest Department's website and offline using printed pamphlets. QR codes were displayed at public places such as bus stands, railway stations, schools, government offices, banks, ATMs, and tourist spots across the district to encourage participation. The polling ended on February 15. Tirupattur District Forest Officer M. Mahendran and Collector K. Sivasoundaravalli officially declared the Indian Grey Hornbill the winner. Forest officials noted that the bird is commonly found in the Ambur and Singarapettai forest ranges and the Yelagiri Hills within the district. This initiative is a step toward protecting endangered species and educating the public on forest and biodiversity conservation.
