In a shocking turn of events, Baramulla MP Engineer Rashid ‘narrowly escaped’ a dangerous attack inside Tihar Jail, reports say. According to the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), which Rashid leads, a group of inmates pushed him and even threw a gate at him. The party was quick to warn, “Had it hit him directly, it could have been fatal. This is nothing short of a deliberate attempt to physically harm him.” Tihar Jail sources confirmed that the MP was attacked by transgender inmates about a week ago. Rashid sustained minor injuries and is currently held in jail number 3, which houses three transgender inmates. The exact reason behind the clash is still being investigated, but prison officials denied rumors of any murder conspiracy, calling them baseless. The AIP’s statement paints a troubling picture: they allege that Kashmiris in Tihar are being housed deliberately with “male transgenders,” who are encouraged to provoke and attack them. Rashid himself, in a recent meeting with his lawyer, revealed a “systematic campaign” targeting Kashmiri detainees over the past three months. The MP further disclosed that some transgender inmates, who are HIV positive and backed by “notorious gangsters” inside the jail, have been intentionally placed with Kashmiri prisoners to stir trouble. Other Kashmiri inmates, the party claims, have also been attacked and humiliated. The situation worsens when prisoners try to pray, with “deliberate attempts made to disturb and provoke them.” The Awami Ittehad Party is demanding an immediate independent investigation and solid guarantees for the safety and dignity of Engineer Rashid and all Kashmiri detainees inside Tihar Jail. The situation raises serious questions about prison safety and the treatment of political prisoners in the capital’s biggest jail. (With inputs from New Delhi)
