Nellore turned into a scene of suspense on Monday evening when 18 youngsters got stuck in the rapid floodwaters of the Penna river near Bhagat Singh Colony. They had gone to a small island-like spot in the river around 5:30 p.m. to enjoy some time together. But by 7:30 p.m., the mood changed drastically as the floodwaters suddenly surrounded them from all sides. Panic set in quickly! Alert local leaders informed the authorities without losing time. The RDO and Nawabpet (Two-Town) police jumped into action right away. Minister Ponguru Narayana, not far away, also checked in with officials to get all the latest updates. Under the sharp eyes of SP Ajitha Vejendla, a powerful rescue plan unfolded by 8 p.m. The Police, Fire, and Revenue departments teamed up for a joint rescue operation. When the police reached the spot, the trapped youths were frightened and started running towards the dangerous water. But brave officers calmed them down, saying, "do not panic." Meanwhile, the Irrigation department cleverly shut the flood gates to slow the water flow, making rescue safer and faster. Braving the risky waters, Nawabpet CI Venugopal Rao and his team boldly climbed down from the center of the bridge using a rope ladder to reach the stranded youngsters. Patience and courage paid off! By 3 a.m. Tuesday, all 18 youths were safely rescued from the flood’s clutches. This daring operation reflects the tireless dedication of the local police and rescue teams who saved lives against the clock in Nellore's Penna river tragedy.
