Hold on tight! Donald Trump just shook the media world by filing a whopping $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times and four of its journalists. Dropped in U.S. District Court in Florida on a Monday, Trump’s lawsuit targets several articles and a book published before the hotly contested 2024 election. He charges these works with being part of a "decades-long pattern by the New York Times of intentional and malicious defamation against President Trump." The complaint screams that the defendants published false statements either "negligently, with knowledge of the falsity, and/or with reckless disregard of their truth or falsity." Trump didn’t hold back in his Truth Social post, accusing The Times of being a "virtual 'mouthpiece' for the Radical Left Democrat Party". He thundered, "The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW!" Not just stopping there, he also blasted the Times for endorsing Kamala Harris in the last presidential election, hinting the paper lost its way and fairness. But the Times fought back fast: spokesperson Charles Stadtlander called the lawsuit baseless and a scary move meant to silence bold reporting, saying, "The New York Times will not be deterred by intimidation tactics." Penguin Random House, publisher of the book included in the suit, labeled it a "meritless lawsuit." This is not Trump’s first fight with major media — earlier, he launched a $10 billion defamation suit against The Wall Street Journal and Rupert Murdoch over a story about his links to financier Jeffrey Epstein. The courtroom drama is heating up, and all eyes are on how this legal battle will shake the powerful media landscape ahead of the 2024 elections.
