Supreme Court Cancels Gangster Chhota Rajan's Bail in 2001 Hotelier Murder Case

September 19, 2025

NEW DELHI: The drama in court took a sharp twist on Wednesday! The Supreme Court slammed the brakes on gangster Chhota Rajan’s freedom by canceling the bail that the Bombay High Court had granted him in the murder case of hotelier Jaya Shetty, dating back to 2001. Rajan, infamous for his long criminal history, was sentenced to life imprisonment in May 2024 for this brutal crime. Now, the Supreme Court, led by Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, has stood firm with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which appealed against the earlier bail order. The top court made it clear that Rajan's case is not the kind where the sentence can be paused or suspended. His lawyer tried to argue that the CBI found no evidence in 48 out of 72 cases against Rajan, hoping to soften the court’s stand. But the judges were unmoved. They fired back, "Conviction in four cases and abscondence of 27 years... why suspension of sentence to such a man?" The point was sharp—Rajan had already proved his dangerousness by running away for 27 years and getting convicted in multiple cases. The chilling backstory involves Jaya Shetty, who was murdered after refusing to pay an extortion demand of Rs 50,000. This heinous crime sent shockwaves then, and after years of legal battles, justice seems to be catching up fast. This Supreme Court verdict sends a strong message that crime will not be rewarded with leniency, especially for a gangster like Chhota Rajan, who has a dark legacy in the Indian underworld.
