Big news from the top court! The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice on the bail appeals filed by Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Gulfisha Fatima, and Meeran Haider. These activists are caught in the large conspiracy case linked to the 2020 North East Delhi riots. The case falls under the tough Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). During the hearing on Monday, a lawyer for the accused told the bench that his clients have already spent over five years in jail! The judges nodded and said they will listen to the appeals carefully and give their decision soon. The hearing date is fixed for October 7, so all eyes are on the Supreme Court then. Remember, the riots broke out in February 2020. The trouble began with fiery clashes over the Citizenship Amendment Act, which shook the city. According to the Delhi Police, these riots tragically caused the death of 53 people and left hundreds injured. The police allege that Umar Khalid and others played a role in plotting bigger riots as part of a larger conspiracy. The Special Cell of Delhi Police filed the FIR under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the UAPA to tackle this serious case. Last month, the Delhi High Court had refused to grant bail to these accused. Not happy, they knocked on the Supreme Court’s door, hoping for a fresh look at their bail pleas. Will the highest court shake things up or stand by the High Court’s order? The upcoming hearing promises drama and crucial decisions. Stay tuned for the October 7 hearing when the Supreme Court will decide the fate of these accused in one of the most talked-about riot cases in recent times.
