What sparked this crackdown? Allegations of a political party secretly funded by Russia using cryptocurrencies—just days before Moldova’s big parliamentary election. According to the National Anticorruption Centre and Balti prosecutors, this case involves serious money laundering and electoral corruption. Officials revealed the story behind the scenes: “They targeted members and supporters of a political party who were suspected of having implemented ‘a criminal plan’ ahead of Sunday's vote.” The money trail is wild—funds allegedly came from Russia itself, passed through secretive crypto exchange services, and were then converted into cash by sneaky couriers. Imagine the shadowy web: crypto accounts, layered transactions, and courier deliveries. The authorities grabbed 800,000 Moldovan lei (around USD 50,000) in cash along with accounting documents and electronic devices. Just a day before, 74 people were detained across 250 raids over a shocking plot to spark "mass riots" and chaos. Moldovan officials said the plan came straight from Russia, involving suspects who traveled to Serbia for training. Pro-Western President Maia Sandu fired a warning on Monday, saying Moscow is splashing hundreds of millions of euros trying to influence the vote. She cried out, “Our sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and European future are in danger.” Meanwhile, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service fired back, accusing European politicians of pushing Moldova into "Russophobic policies" and claiming Europeans planned to cheat in the election.
