Yamuna River Water Quality Improves in Delhi During September Floods, But Still Not Safe for Bathing

September 26, 2025

Get ready for some good news mixed with caution! The mighty Yamuna river flowing through Delhi saw a splash of improvement in its water quality this September. According to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee’s (DPCC) monthly report, heavy floodwaters acted like a natural cleanser, washing away many pollutants from the river. This season, just like clockwork every monsoon, extra water rushed into the Yamuna, diluting the nasty pollutants that usually choke it. But don’t pop the champagne yet—the improvement often vanishes as quickly as it comes, DPCC data warns. The report showed that on September 3, when the river was running full due to rain upstream, water was sampled at eight points along Delhi’s stretch of the Yamuna. At two spots, the river was flowing too strongly to even test the water! Still, many places showed better water parameters than even in August, marking a positive trend. However, here’s the tricky part—most spots still failed to reach the bathing water quality standards. So, if you were planning a dip, think twice! Despite Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal orders over the last 30 years pushing clean-up efforts, the Delhi stretch remains one of India’s most polluted river sections. So, while nature’s rains give the river a useful flush each monsoon, the battle to make Yamuna truly clean continues. As the DPCC report reminds us, real change demands more than just floods—it needs serious, ongoing action to save this lifeline of Delhi.
