Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami, is one of India’s biggest and most colorful festivals. It stands for the great victory of good over evil and the power of truth. All over the country, people enjoy grand Ramlila plays and big, fiery effigies of Ravana. Families gather to celebrate with loads of joy, sweets, and stories. Two actors from the popular show Itti Si Khushi, Rishi Saxena and Gouri Tonnk, recently opened up about how they celebrate this radiant festival and what it means to them. Rishi Saxena, who plays Sanjay, took us to his childhood in Jodhpur. “For me, Dussehra has always been a festival of community and togetherness. In Jodhpur, where I grew up, Dussehra celebrations are grand — you can see Ravana sculptures everywhere, and the entire city lights up with a festive glow. I have such fond memories of going with my family to watch the burning of Ravana’s effigy. I remember my father used to pick me up and sit me on his shoulders so I could see it clearly, followed by enjoying sweets, festive food, and family gatherings. It’s one of those festivals that truly brings everyone together and reminds us of the power of truth and righteousness,” he shared warmly. On the other hand, Gouri Tonnk, who plays Nandini, reflected on the deeper, spiritual side of Dussehra. She said, “I have always loved Dussehra because it’s not just about Ravana’s defeat but about conquering the Ravana within us — our inner fears, ego, and negativity. As a child, I enjoyed watching Ramlila with my family, and even today, I try to visit at least one pandal or Ravana Dahan event with my kids. It’s a beautiful way to teach them about values and the importance of good triumphing over evil.” For both actors, Dussehra is not only a time to have fun but also a moment to reflect on life, celebrate goodness, and spread positive vibes. The festival’s magic lies in its power to unite hearts and minds, lighting up the darkest corners with hope and courage.
