September 28, 2025

Heartbreaking news shook the golf and sports world as Makena White, the 28-year-old girlfriend of PGA golfer Jake Knapp, passed away earlier this week. A close friend confirmed the sad news on Instagram on September 26, sharing a touching tribute. "Hi everyone – this is Makena’s friend, writing with the heaviest heart to share that Makena passed away earlier this week," the post said. Loved by many, Makena’s friend described her as “one of a kind,” a person whose laughter, joy, and adventurous soul lit up every room. "To be loved by Makena was a gift; one that came with endless laughter, so much joy, and a healthy sprinkling of chaos." Born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, Makena graduated from McMaster University in 2019 with degrees in communications and software engineering. She worked in surgical sales, helping provide vital equipment to vascular and cardiac surgeons. Her love for sports was deep, having grown up supporting the Ottawa Senators hockey team. After falling in love with Jake Knapp, her passion for golf reignited. Jake, 31, turned pro in 2016 and played on PGA Tour Canada, later joining the Korn Ferry Tour multiple times. Only six weeks before her untimely death, Makena shared a heartfelt message for Jake on Instagram. She wrote, "Year 2 of first fairway hugs & watching you live out your dreams. Second season in the books. Forever grateful to be on this walk with you, here’s to many many many more! I looooove you sweet boy, you make it so dang easy to be proud." The golfing community quickly voiced their grief. CBS Sports reporter Amanda Balionis recalled, "Getting to know Makena was one of my favorite parts of this last year. So much laughter, passion and she never met a stranger. I will miss her light… it touched so many." Golf writer and podcaster Dan Rapoport called her "a light." Makena’s friend asked people to honor her memory with donations to the Bruyère Brain Health & Memory Clinic or the Griffin Bell Endowment Fund. The world mourns someone who brought so much joy, love, and a dash of exciting chaos to all who knew her. As her friend beautifully said, "We love you Mak. We’ll miss you always, and we’ll be looking for you in the sunset."
