Brazilian skateboarding legend Sandro Dias, aged 50, made history with a mind-blowing skateboarding stunt! He dropped 60 meters and reached 103 km/h speed from a ramp built off a 22-storey building. This incredible achievement earned him two Guinness World Records – highest drop and fastest speed on a skateboard. The amazing feat happened in Porto Alegre, a southern city in Brazil, where Dias took an eight-second wild ride down a huge ramp attached to the CAFF state government building. He is no stranger to success, being a six-time world champion in vert skateboarding (that’s riding on halfpipes). Sandro revealed to AFP how this idea was born: “I was a kid, and the imagination of any skater who sees it goes: 'Wow, it looks like a ramp!'” He spotted the building’s curved facade back in the 1980s but only seriously dreamed of this drop about 13 years ago when he pitched the project to his sponsor Red Bull. He recalled, “In my head, it was possible, but it was almost impossible.” Three years ago, he got permission to bring his daring dream to life. Despite being 47 and never having trained in a gym before, he made a brave decision to prepare his body intensely. This year, Sandro put on weighted vests to simulate the heavy forces—almost four times his body weight—that he would feel during the drop. He also practiced on his skateboard being pushed by a car at speeds up to 136 km/h! Mental strength was key too, and he admitted, "I didn't let fear take over." After three practice runs that went higher and higher, Sandro finally went for it. As he zoomed down and landed safely on crash pads like those used in MotoGP, he threw his arms up in a victorious celebration. The crowd roared to see such a daring spirit achieve greatness. Sandro Dias, who helped bring skateboarding into the limelight in Brazil, said, “Retiring doesn't even cross my mind. There are many things to come. Skateboarding moves me. Skateboarding is my life and it's what I love to do.” From a childhood dream to a thrilling reality, Sandro Dias showed us the sky is not the limit for a true skateboarding hero!
