Chennai witnessed a tragic moment as a stampede broke out at a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur on Saturday evening, leaving many dead and injured. TVK chief and popular actor Vijay expressed deep sorrow, saying he is "shattered" and "writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow." He emotionally vowed to help the families affected. "No matter who offers words of comfort, the loss of our loved ones is unbearable. Yet, as a member of your family, I intend to provide ₹20 lakh to each family that has lost a loved one and ₹2 lakh to those who are injured and receiving treatment. This amount is, of course, not significant in the face of such a loss. Still, at this moment, it is my duty as one who belongs to your family to stand by you, my dear ones, with a heavy heart," Vijay posted on X. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin responded cautiously, stating he would not make any political comments before the inquiry commission led by former high court judge Aruna Jagadeesan completes its investigation. The Union Home Ministry has demanded a detailed report from the state government regarding this disaster. Home Minister Amit Shah held talks with Stalin and Governor RN Ravi to review the crisis and promised all possible support. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced compensation for victims' families, declaring ₹2 lakh each for those who lost their lives and ₹50,000 each for the injured. The tragedy has sparked a political firestorm. BJP leader K Annamalai accused the ruling DMK government of "gross negligence" in managing crowd safety at the rally. AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami also criticized police failures and blamed the inexperience of TVK for the mishap. The Karur stampede has shaken the state, igniting grief, promises of compensation, and fierce political blame games. As the inquiry unfolds, many await justice and answers to prevent such disasters in the future.
