In a blockbuster real estate move shaking India’s business world, Sahara India Commercial Corporation announced it wants to sell 88 of its properties to Adani Properties Ltd. Guess what? Insiders whisper the deal’s value is NOT small—it’s over a whopping Rs 1 lakh crore! This eye-popping news came on Tuesday during a Supreme Court hearing. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, speaking for the Sahara group, told the Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice B R Gavai that the two companies have signed a secret term sheet. It is locked inside a sealed cover, waiting for the Court’s green signal. He said, “The deal would be proceeded with once SC approves, and the money received from it would be far in excess of the dues of Sahara group.” Pitching in for Adani, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi said the huge deal involves buying all the Sahara properties "en bloc" - meaning, all together in one go. He admitted he didn’t know the exact money Adani is offering but confirmed the term sheet was with the Court. Insiders close to the matter hint the price tag is well beyond Rs 1 lakh crore but kept mum on exact figures. Why does this matter? Back in 2012, the Supreme Court had ordered Sahara's two companies—Sahara Housing and Sahara Real Estate—to deposit around Rs 25,000 crore in a SEBI-Sahara account. But till now, they owe nearly Rs 9,481 crore. Amicus curiae Shekhar Naphade reminded the Court about this, signaling that the sale proceeds might cover this debt. The government wants a full check too! Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that the money in the SEBI-Sahara account is meant to refund investors. So, Saharas' big land sale to Adani can only proceed after government vetting. The Finance and Cooperation ministries have now joined the case. The Court asked the government, SEBI, and amicus curiae to give their opinions on this deal within three weeks. They also want help from Naphade to create a clear list of the properties with details. Interestingly, Sibal revealed there might be some extra properties Saharas were not even aware of, making the number 88 properties or more. In the upcoming days, the Supreme Court will decide if this mega property sale should happen all at once or in smaller parts. The next hearing is scheduled for November 17. Will this landmark deal finally clear the hurdle and change the Indian real estate game forever? Stay tuned!
