Chery Automobile Plans Big Entry into India with Sedans, SUVs & More Patented Models

October 22, 2025

Get ready, India! China’s Chery Automobile Co Ltd, the fourth-largest carmaker in China, is all set to make a splash in the Indian market. Recent secret filings have revealed a treasure trove of design patents submitted to India between April and June 2025. These patents include eye-catching sedans, SUVs, and even minivans, showing the variety Chery might roll out here. One star model spotted is the Arrizo 8 sedan—a premium ride boasting a powerful 1.6-litre or 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine with up to 241 horsepower and 390 Nm torque. With a classy 4757mm length and a roomy 2770mm wheelbase, it promises “upper class business life,” just like in China. Fancy features to impress include "VIP welcome lights," a dazzling 24.6-inch duplex screen, a 540-degree surround view system, and a 50W wireless phone charger. But wait, there’s more! Chery’s top-end Tiggo 8 SUV is also on the cards, coming in sleek six- or seven-seater versions. It packs a punch with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine and a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) option, equipped with six driving modes, four-wheel drive, a 7-speed DCT transmission, and a rocking 12-speaker sound system. Safety features? A whopping 10 airbags, 19 advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS), an integrated dashcam, and a multilingual voice assistant. Chery’s Indian adventure isn’t a sudden move. The company was linked with India’s JSW Group for launching its own brand and working alongside JSW MG Motor India, a joint venture with SAIC. Yet, the deal seems more like a licensing agreement for technology, safeguarding Chery’s intellectual property rights here. Remember, Chery had even toyed with joining hands with Tata Motors back in 2019, but that plan didn’t take off. India’s car market is a gold mine for global automakers thanks to its rapid growth. But getting in is tricky. Political tensions and roadblocks have slowed down other Chinese giants like BYD and MG, which faced challenges in setting up plants and adjusting stakes. Meanwhile, the plot thickens as Stellantis eyes India for bringing its Chinese EV brand Leapmotor soon. With all these players gearing up, the Indian auto scene is buzzing with excitement! In short, if Chery’s sleek cars hit our roads, Indian buyers might soon enjoy premium Chinese rides loaded with style and tech. Watch this space as the battle for India’s auto hearts speeds up!
