BENGALURU: The Karnataka High Court has served a fresh dose of reality to a man seeking divorce on grounds of cruelty by his wife. The man hoped for a quick win but instead met a firm NO from the bench. The court made it clear: Marriage is no game! Both husband and wife must give and take to keep the love alive. The man, working in the US, married a Singapore-based woman in 2015. But their married life together lasted only 25 days, including a 10-day stay in India. Trouble brewed, and in 2016, he filed for divorce, claiming cruelty by his wife. However, the Bengaluru family court wasn’t convinced. In 2020, it dismissed his petition, noting the wife proved the husband and his mother were upset for not getting a big dowry or property from her. Not giving up, the husband climbed higher to the Karnataka High Court. But the judges, Justices Jayant Banerji and Umesh M Adiga, saw through his claims. They said, “Marriage is regarded as a sacred union, not merely a cohabitation between a man and a woman.” The court added, “This union cannot be dissolved simply by filing a petition in court and making allegations against one another.” The court went on to say that the man wanted “an obedient and sincere maid rather than a wife.” They ruled that his “unwillingness to adjust led to the breakdown of the marital relationship.” Instead of nurturing his marriage, he looked for obedience over companionship. In a sharp conclusion, the court called the husband’s reasons “trivial” for seeking divorce and emphasized the importance of compromise in married life. So, this spicy legal drama ends with a reminder: Marriage demands patience, understanding, and most importantly, give and take!
