When Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India must “lead the world in the responsible use of artificial intelligence and build the infrastructure that powers it,” many thought it was a far-off dream. But now, this dream is taking a giant leap on the shores of the Bay of Bengal. In Visakhapatnam, a mega $15 billion AI data center campus is rising, built by the Adani Group and Google Cloud. It’s set to be the largest AI hub outside the United States! Imagine that – India moving from just using tech to powering the world’s digital brain. Modi himself hailed the project on X, saying he “welcomed Google’s commitment to invest in India’s AI future and to help make Digital India a global force for innovation and inclusion.” This feels like destiny unfolding. Gautam Adani saw this coming early. Back in 2021, he warned data centers would need "infinite energy," so he focused on clean energy as the key. In 2022, his Adani Green Energy pledged over $70 billion to solar, wind, and storage, building what he calls "energy-to-compute" corridors. Then in 2023, they launched AdaniConneX and Adani AI Labs, aiming big on data-center power. The 2024 buyout of Coredge paved the way for India’s own cloud, and by 2025, the $15 billion Adani-Google AI campus was born. Adani calls this effort India’s "second freedom struggle" — building the "infrastructure of intelligence." Unlike others who buy power, Adani created a full loop: green energy, fiber, ports, data centers, and cloud — all working aligned. The Visakhapatnam project is their boldest move yet. Google’s side? They get a golden ticket to use their complete AI technology in one of the fastest-growing digital markets. Google Cloud said this will "empower businesses, developers, and citizens to harness AI responsibly and securely." CEO Sundar Pichai, after meeting Modi, said Google is “excited to support India’s AI mission by building advanced infrastructure and developing talent for the next decade.” Jeyakumar Janakraj, CEO of AdaniConneX, shared with Newsweek that this is not just business—it’s about making India a global AI power. “This partnership combines Google’s AI capabilities with Adani’s expertise to create a foundation for India’s digital self-reliance,” he explained. India’s AI market is booming, expected to grow from $1 billion now to $8 billion by 2030, zooming at over 40% yearly. The Visakhapatnam campus will have a massive 1 gigawatt compute capacity, all powered by renewable energy from Adani’s gigantic Khavda Renewable Park in Gujarat—the largest solar and wind setup in the world! Building all this is no small feat. Janakraj said the challenge was coordination, syncing land, energy, construction, and talent into one smooth system. The project has also won strong support from top leaders: IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw called it “a cornerstone of the IndiaAI Mission,” Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said it will “generate tens of thousands of high-skill jobs,” and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said it “cements Andhra Pradesh’s place on the global technology map.” India produces more than 8 exabytes of data daily, and with tighter data rules, keeping AI processes inside the country becomes vital. Owning Coredge allows AI workloads to stay within India’s borders, boosting data sovereignty. Janakraj pointed out that the main goal is making AI tools and computing power affordable and accessible for all Indians. This will help startups, researchers, and companies compete worldwide. This story is huge—not just in money or size but in what it means. It’s not a Silicon Valley or Beijing tale. It’s the story of Visakhapatnam, where India’s huge digital dream meets its industrial strength. As Gautam Adani said, “If India’s AI revolution is a skyscraper, we are building its foundation.” And what a thrilling foundation it is, shining bright on the Bay of Bengal!
