NEW DELHI: The India-Canada friendship is heating up after Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand’s recent visit, where both sides announced new plans to boost trade, energy, and security ties. But that’s just the beginning! Both countries are now chatting about even more big meetings in the next few months. One sizzling highlight: Prime Minister Narendra Modi might meet Canada’s counterpart, Mark Carney, at the upcoming G20 summit in South Africa this November 22-23. The meeting could give the relationship the extra sparkle it needs. They first met back in June during the G7 summit in Canada, and now the buzz is about a possible Carney visit to India early next year. India’s high commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, told The Globe and Mail, “We want an early visit of the Prime Minister to India. It is a relationship we do not want to go downhill.” These words show just how serious India is about keeping the India-Canada bond strong and climbing higher. During Anita Anand’s trip, the two countries also promised to start fresh trade talks. Modi himself met Anand, marking the relationship’s growing importance. However, talks had been stuck since 2023 due to differences after Canada’s former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian officials of being behind the killing of Sikh separatist and Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar. But hope is not lost! Patnaik said, “If Canada wants to start negotiations (for a trade deal) we would be more than happy to speed up things, to do it in a fast way. You are looking at minimum of $50 billion (bilateral trade volume) if we allow the proper environment for it.” That’s a massive number, promising big gains for both nations. India has also invited Mark Carney for its AI summit in February next year, hoping the Canadian PM will join the event. Clearly, both countries want to keep their relationship bustling and full of fresh energy. With talks heating up and key meetings on the horizon, India and Canada are cooking up a storm in friendship and trade!
