Mithali Raj Opens Up: Beating Australia Now a Real Dream for Indian Women Cricketers

October 27, 2025

India versus Australia in a semi-final — sounds exciting, right? Mithali Raj, the famed former India captain, spills the masala on what makes Australia such a strong team and how things are changing for India. "You have to beat Australia," she says, calling them "a standard above most other teams." Why? Because for years, Australia has been the queen bee of women's cricket, reaching finals in all big tournaments. But the story is changing! Thanks to the Women's Premier League (WPL), Indian players now spend time alongside Aussie stars. Mithali explains, "It helps to know how they think and prepare. That humanises the player, and you aren’t as intimidated on the field anymore." She remembers how India gave Australia a scare in recent matches. "In one high-scoring game, India was cruising towards winning!" Maybe, just maybe, Australia feels some jitters when facing India in knockouts. What does it feel like playing facing legends like Beth Mooney or Ash Gardner? Mithali says it’s about understanding their game plans and fast adaptability, especially in bowling. "The Australian bowlers quickly read the pitch and find their spots," she laughs. So, do Indian players look differently at Australia now compared to the 2022 World Cup? "Absolutely! The current Indian team believes they can beat Australia despite their deep line-up and strong bowling. The form and wins this year have boosted their confidence." What about the match strategy? Mithali cracks the code: early wickets are key. Australia’s top batters like Alyssa Healy and Phoebe Litchfield start strong, so India needs to strike early. The spinners have been good friends for India, but "Navi Mumbai pitches offer less spin," she warns. Hence, the bowling mix must be smart. Should India pick extra batters or bowlers? "Three seamers and two spinners with either Harmanpreet or Pratika filling in as the sixth bowler," Mithali suggests. Choosing the perfect XI is a mix of skill and confidence. "Psychology is very important. The team must feel sure about their combination." Is Australia less invincible now? Mithali nods, "Yes, they have flaws. Their middle order has been tested. It’s not like they are unbeatable anymore." What does Australia think of India now? "They probably see India as the trickiest opponent among the semi-finalists," says Mithali. "Our openers have been smashing 300-plus totals, so they will target the early wickets." Who should bat or bowl first? Mithali’s advice: "Bat first and put runs on the board to pressure Australia. They like to chase but prefer to set a total in big games." Handling pressure is crucial. Mithali recalls some fielding slips against Australia due to high expectations, but advises, "Don't think ‘we are playing at home.’ Play as if anywhere else. No pressure, just do your best." And the golden advice to the team? "Don’t put too much pressure on yourselves. Focus on your mental and physical best. Be aware of moments in the game where momentum can shift. That’s how to beat Australia." Asked for a prediction, Mithali smiles: "It’s going to be a tight game. I give Australia 60 and India 40. But on any given day, anything can happen!" One thing's certain — fans are in for a thriller!
