UIDAI Plans New Aadhaar Card with Photo and QR Code to Stop Misuse and Illegal Offline Use
November 19, 2025
Get ready for a new twist in your Aadhaar card! The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is cooking up a plan to change the traditional Aadhaar card. Instead of the full details printed on it, the new Aadhaar card may show just a photo and a QR code. Why this big change? To stop people from misusing Aadhaar data and to crack down on illegal offline verification.
UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar explained the idea clearly: "There is a thought process as to why there should be any detail on the card. It should be only a photo and a QR code. If we keep printing, then people will keep accepting what is printed. People who know how to misuse it will keep misusing it."
Currently, the Aadhaar Act bans collecting, using, or storing Aadhaar numbers or biometric info offline. But guess what? Many hotels, event organisers, and other entities still keep photocopies anyway. Kumar warned, "Aadhaar should never be used as a document. It should only be authenticated with the Aadhaar number or verified using QR code. Otherwise, it can be a fake document."
Mark your calendars! On December 1, this proposal to tighten rules and stop offline misuse will be discussed by the Aadhaar authority.
But that’s not all. UIDAI is also ready to launch a new and improved Aadhaar app. It will replace the current mAadhaar app and bring cool features like updating your address proof, adding family members without mobile phones, and even updating mobile numbers using face authentication. This app will make Aadhaar verification as easy as using the Digiyatra app.
The new app and card will help many places verify identities, such as entering events, cinema halls, buying age-restricted products, hotel check-ins, and even residential societies.
A UIDAI official explained how this will work: "Aadhaar holder will show the QR code in the scanner of offline verification seeking entities (OVSE). The system will then prompt for face verification. This will also work as proof of the presence of an Aadhaar number holder." Soon, these OVSEs will need approval and technical integration to use this secure system.
In short, UIDAI is gearing up to protect your identity better, make Aadhaar simpler, and clamp down on cheating. Stay tuned for a safer, smarter Aadhaar experience!
