The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has invited construction bids for 5,623 tenements as part of Phase I of the Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar and Kamraj Nagar slum redevelopment project in Ghatkopar. The Rs 8,498 crore project aims to create a housing cluster with over 17,000 homes and civic amenities including a freeway link to Thane. The first phase covers 6.95 hectares and will feature 11 residential towers. This marks MMRDA's first independent venture into slum rehabilitation. The project received approval on Dec 12, 2023, and is crucial for MMRDA to generate funds. MMRDA estimates earnings of Rs 1,073 crore from the sale of residential tenements if built by them, and Rs 2,918 crore if sold to a developer. The project is expected to be completed within a three-year timeline from the day the land is transferred by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA).
