China’s SMIC Sounds Alarm on Memory Chip Crunch: AI Demand Sends Prices and Delays Soaring
November 19, 2025
China’s biggest chipmaker, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC), is ringing the alarm bells! CEO Zhao Haijun warned that a shortage of memory chips is looming, and it’s shaking up the entire chip industry. Why? Because customers are holding back on ordering other chips while they wait to see how this memory crunch plays out.
The core of the problem is the booming demand for special high-performance memory used in artificial intelligence (AI) machines. This type of memory, called High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM), is a hot favorite in AI servers running on chips like Nvidia’s, making it a jackpot for suppliers such as SK Hynix and Micron.
Zhao explained, “Everyone is hesitant to place too many orders or ship too much in the first quarter of next year because they don’t know how many mobile phones, cars, or other products [the memory chip industry] can supply.” This means businesses are playing it safe, delaying orders for parts used in phones, cars, and PCs.
Experts say this AI explosion is gobbling up a huge chunk of chip supply. Dan Nystedt of TriOrient said, “The AI build-out is absolutely eating up a lot of the available chip supply, and 2026 looks to be far bigger than this year in terms of overall demand.” He also warned that this squeeze could hit cheaper chips for consumer gadgets and vehicles badly.
Prices are already climbing. M.S. Hwang from Counterpoint Research shared, “With memory prices rising and availability shrinking, concerns about production bottlenecks are gaining traction.” He noted that budget smartphones and set-top boxes are feeling the impact, especially in China, which relies heavily on low-cost electronics.
Lastly, shoppers might have to open their wallets wider. Market researcher TrendForce said the memory market has entered a “robust upward pricing cycle.” This could cause brands to hike prices for smartphones, laptops, and other gadgets in the near future.
In short, AI’s hunger for memory is stirring up a storm in the chip world. It’s a thrilling, stressful saga unfolding that could mean pricier and delayed gadgets for all of us next year. Stay tuned as the chip drama continues!
