A Mumbai-based lawyer and social activist, Sagar Kantilal Devre, has raised a big alarm! On November 19, 2025, he rushed to Bombay High Court asking them to cancel the BMC’s decision that allows controlled feeding of pigeons at four spots, including the busy Airoli-Mulund creekside. Why the fuss? Mr. Devre says this move puts public health, road safety, and nature at serious risk. This battle is part of a wider fight. Earlier, the High Court had backed BMC’s total ban on pigeon feeding at the usual 'Kabutarkhanas' because pigeons can spread dangerous lung diseases like hypersensitivity pneumonitis, histoplasmosis, and cryptococcosis. Even the Supreme Court had refused to change this order. But in October, after public pressure, BMC softened its stance with a new plan. Feeding is now allowed only between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m at four places: Worli Reservoir, a mangrove patch in Andheri West, Gorai Maidan in Borivali, and Airoli-Mulund creekside. NGOs were asked to keep these places clean and control crowds until experts finish their report. Here is where Mr. Devre jumps in again. He calls Airoli-Mulund "highly unsuitable" because photos show traffic jams and dirty conditions there. The petition warns, "The sudden flight of large flocks near a busy arterial road connecting Mumbai and Navi Mumbai could trigger accidents." It also raises alarm bells about disturbing the fragile mangrove environment and hurting migratory birds like flamingos. Health worries are loud and clear! Pigeon droppings release fungal spores and allergens that can cause serious, irreversible lung damage, especially in kids, the elderly, and those with weak immunity. Plus, droppings cause corrosion of infrastructure and block drains, creating more problems. Earlier, the High Court had ordered a special 13-member expert panel with doctors, microbiologists, and nature and animal welfare experts to study this issue closely and suggest solutions. Everyone is now waiting for their report. Mr. Devre has asked the court for permission to intervene in the case and wants BMC to rethink making Airoli-Mulund a pigeon feeding site. The battle for safer streets and cleaner environment continues!
