Hold on to your seats, because Hyderabad police just busted a high-drama cyber-intimidation racket that aimed to shake one of India's biggest drug makers, Hetero Group! The scammers demanded a massive ransom of $250 million from a senior employee. How? By threatening to spill fake secrets to the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) and ruin the company’s reputation overnight. The Cyberabad police uncovered that the fraudsters claimed to hold a treasure trove of "confidential" and "damaging" information about Hetero’s operations and regulatory records. To scare the company even more, they pretended they could "manage" or influence the USFDA itself, creating a scary illusion of pending regulatory trouble and huge compliance headaches. The scammers sent threatening emails with fake documents and screenshots, acting as if USFDA officials were on their side. They even used the private app Signal to secretly talk about the false threats. It was a clever and dangerous play to squeeze the company into paying up. Hetero Group, however, stood firm. They told the police the whole thing was a made-up, malicious plan just to force them into paying illegal ransom. Because of the fake threats, Hetero had to face a real USFDA inspection, which put the company’s name and work under a big spotlight. Speaking about the inspection, the USFDA last month found several violations at a Hetero Labs warehouse in Visakhapatnam – damaged drums, open lids, torn labels, and even uninvited guests like birds, lizards, and cats! Hetero said that particular warehouse was not used for US supplies. The police have already arrested two people linked to this clever cyber-danger game. This case shows how cybercrime can try to shake even big companies with fake claims and high-stake threats. As Hyderabad’s cybercrime cell stated, the fraudsters’ actions brought serious risks to Hetero's reputation and compliance status. Can companies like Hetero stay safe from such blackmail? Only time will tell, but for now, Hyderabad police’s arrest brings hope that such frightening cybercrimes won’t go unchecked!
