In a dramatic and worrying event, a 16-year-old girl gave birth to a baby boy inside the washroom of Sri D. Devaraj Urs Pre-Matric Girls Hostel in Koppal district on November 26. The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) did not waste a moment and sprung into action by registering a suo motu complaint after media reports brought the case to light. Shashidhar S. Kosambe, the Chairperson of KSCPCR, quickly wrote to the district collector and Superintendent of Police in Koppal demanding urgent information about what the district administration has done and instructed officials to act within three days. The Kukanoor Police have registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 2012, against a 23-year-old man. This man was in a relationship with the young girl and had promised marriage. But as the law steps in, the question of hostel safety and care grabs the spotlight. Six people including hostel staff members, teachers, and health workers are now facing allegations of serious negligence. The KSCPCR’s letter described the care provided as "glaring negligence," demanding accountability, especially for the vulnerable girls staying at the hostel. Both the new mother and her baby are receiving medical care at the district hospital and are reported to be in good health. This incident has opened a fresh wave of concern about the safety and supervision in residential schools and hostels across the region. KSCPCR’s immediate suo motu complaint shows a zero-tolerance policy towards such lapses.
