Punjab Farmers Rally in Chandigarh: Demanding MSP Law, Education Reforms, and Justice on 5th Anniversary
November 27, 2025
A big crowd of farmers from Punjab gathered in Chandigarh on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, shouting their long-pending demands! Under the banner of Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), more than 30 farmer and farm labour unions united to mark five years of their anti-farm law struggle against the Central Government. They handed over a strong memorandum to local officials, addressed to the President of India.
Jagmohan Singh, the fiery general secretary of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Dakonda) and SKM member, said, "We have demanded that agriculture and other sectors related to agriculture should be excluded from the tax-free trade agreements being made with various countries. MSP and purchase guarantee laws and permanent employment should be arranged. Besides, the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025 should not be passed." Farmers want these promises in stone!
The demands went beyond farming. Students from Panjab University want their Senate elections announced immediately. They want the National Education Policy scrapped and education shifted to the State List from the Concurrent List, giving Punjab more control. The state should create a modern, fair education plan that fits Punjab’s special needs.
Farmers also want sugarcane prices to rise sharply to ₹500 per quintal—a sweet deal for their hard work! They demand cancellation of all fines and cases against farmers for burning paddy stubble, which has been a heated issue during harvesting seasons. All pending demands and cases from the Delhi protests—a major farmer uprising—should be dropped, declared Singh.
Meanwhile, Panjab University students protested fiercely on campus, shouting for Senate elections. The 'Panjab University Bachao Morcha' called for university closure on November 26, even though a holiday was already announced. The university has started getting approval from the Vice-President of India, who is also the Chancellor, but students insisted the protest won’t end until the election schedule is officially out.
A group of former senators, including respected Professor Chaman Lal, demanded, "The election schedule of the Senate should be immediately notified." He added the elected Senate must focus on academic reforms that help the university grow without breaking its democratic spirit.
Professor Lal also gave a bold statement on the political front: "The Central government should either transfer Chandigarh city to Punjab to fulfill its long pending and accepted legitimate demand, which will solve Panjab University issues, as its inter-state character will revert to Punjab State University as it was between 1947 to 1966, or make a clear declaration that Chandigarh and by implication Panjab University will be handed over to Punjab in a time bound manner."
The farmers’ vibrant rally and the students' firm protests show a strong voice rising for Punjab’s rights—whether it’s fair crop prices, better education, or political clarity on Chandigarh. The scene in Chandigarh on November 26 was buzzing with energy, determination, and hope for real change.
