Telangana Food Safety Dept Raids E-Commerce Warehouses, Finds Expired & Misbranded Food Galore!
November 28, 2025
Hold on to your shopping carts! The Telangana Food Safety Department launched a powerful two-day shock inspection on November 25 and 26, targeting warehouses behind some of your favourite e-commerce platforms. This special safety sweep stretched across 75 warehouses in 33 districts, including the busy Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area.
This big mission didn't miss a spot, checking places linked to giants like Zepto, Reliance JioMart, BlinkIt, Big Basket, Zomato, Swiggy, Flipkart, Amazon, and more local hubs. Officials grabbed a total of 222 samples — 98 tough enforcement ones and 124 surveillance picks — to test food quality and packaging.
Commissioner of Food Safety Sangeetha Satyanarayana explained the reason behind this big move: "The exercise was taken up to assess the way e-commerce supply chains are now handling a large volume of packaged food." She added, "The drive was meant to evaluate compliance with food safety norms in the expanding online grocery and rapid delivery ecosystem. With more consumers relying on e-commerce platforms for daily food items, the need for frequent inspections to ensure that warehouses maintain proper storage conditions and prevent expired or unsafe goods from reaching households."
The results shook the food delivery world. Officials seized a whopping 1,903 units of expired or misbranded products and food items with misleading labels! That's not all—they also threw away 76 kilograms of spoiled veggies and nasty stale products that simply shouldn't be sold.
When it came to enforcing safety, 32 improvement notices were served, demanding quick action. GHMC alone was the hotspot, with 25 warehouses checked and 19 improvement notices slapped on them. Inspectors made sure these warehouses understood that proper storage isn’t optional—it’s a must for keeping food safe.
This sweep is a wake-up call for online shoppers and warehouse operators alike. As more people buy groceries online, it’s crucial to keep a hawk-eyed watch on food quality. After all, quick delivery loses all its charm if the food turns out unsafe or rotten. Thanks to this watchdog move, Telangana is stepping up to make sure our food’s journey from warehouse to kitchen is fresh and foolproof!
