Young National Guard Soldier Killed in DC Shooting Sparks Heated Political Clash Over Terrorism
November 28, 2025
A tragic and deadly shooting shook Washington when two National Guard soldiers were attacked just near the White House. Twenty-year-old Specialist Sarah Beckstrom was sadly killed, and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains critically hurt. The attacker, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, is a 29-year-old Afghan who came to the US in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome, a program helping Afghans who assisted America during its war against the Taliban.
The news hit hard. New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani expressed his sadness with a heartfelt message on social media. He said, “I’m devastated to learn of the passing of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, a member of the West Virginia National Guard. She was only twenty years old.”
But this grief soon turned into a fiery online battle. Right-wing commentator Laura Loomer slammed Mamdani for not mentioning Islamic terrorism at all. She fired back on social media: “Zero mention of Islamic terrorism from NYC’s Islamic jihadist mayor, ‘Idk why Muslims even bother commenting on tragedies unless they plan on condemning the act of Islamic terror.’”
Loomer accused the socialist Democrat Mamdani of picking and choosing what to speak about, calling him out for being distant from what she calls “blood and soil Americans.” She added, “Zohran Mamdani’s comments are very antagonistic to actual blood and soil Americans. Which Mamdani will never be.”
This attack came after President Donald Trump announced on Thanksgiving that Specialist Beckstrom had died from her injuries. Police had arrested the Afghan national, and the Trump administration declared they would halt immigration processing for Afghans and review green card approvals from 19 countries. Trump also vowed to “permanently pause migration” from all “third world countries,” though he did not specify which ones.
The tensions are nothing new. Laura Loomer has frequently targeted Mamdani online, even comparing his election success to the arrival of “another 9/11.” Despite Trump recently affirming that Mamdani is “a great guy” and denying calling him a jihadist, Loomer continues to label the Indian-Ugandan mayor-elect with harsh names.
This shooting tragedy not only exposed the pain of loss but stirred a heated political war of words, showing how sensitive and divided issues about terrorism and immigration remain in America today.
