Karnataka PU Lecturers Protest Govt's Move to Teach Class 9-10, Demand Autonomy
November 28, 2025
Get ready for some sizzling education drama from Bengaluru! On Friday, lecturers from government and aided Pre-University (PU) colleges gathered in full force at Freedom Park to raise their voices loud and clear. What's their gripe? The Karnataka government wants PU lecturers to start teaching not just their regular classes but also students of classes 9 and 10. The lecturers are saying, "No way!"
Here’s the spicy detail: Currently, PU lecturers and high school teachers have clear separate roles and recruitment rules. PU lecturers fall under Group-B, while high school teachers are in Group-C. It’s like having two different teams for two different levels. The PU lecturers emphasize, "The undergraduate education is not an extension of the school level, it is the source of preparation for higher education." So, mixing their duties would mean extra workload and mess up their main job.
The lecturers allege that the Department of Pre-University Education’s proposal to change the recruitment rules from 2013 is a bitter pill. They warn, "The amendment proposal will create additional teaching burden and hinder the lecturers’ commitment to their duties."
But the protest doesn’t stop there! The Karnataka State Government Pre-University College Lecturers’ Association also dropped a demand bombshell—they want the government to stop giving permission for starting new private PU colleges for the next three years. And there’s more: they want immediate payment of pending dues for evaluating the II PUC exams of 2024-25.
This protest at Freedom Park isn’t just a small noise; it’s a big message to the government. The PU lecturers want respect for their autonomy and their existing workload to be acknowledged. What will the government do next? For now, the lecturers are standing strong, armed with their demands and passion for education.
