West Bengal Identifies 27 Lakh Dead and Duplicate Voters in Roll Revision Ahead of 2026 Polls
November 29, 2025
West Bengal’s ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll has identified about 27 lakh voters as dead, duplicate, untraceable, or shifted till November 28, 2025, said sources in the Chief Electoral Officer’s office. This includes roughly 15,53,000 dead voters from the state’s 7.6 crore registered electors as of October 27, 2025. Additionally, 58,164 duplicate voters were found, along with about 2.61 lakh untraceable and 8.88 lakh shifted voters.
These numbers come from 99.83% enumeration forms distributed and 87.91% digitized statewide, with 1.31 lakh forms yet to be distributed. The enumeration phase will end on December 4, leaving six days for voters to submit forms.
The Bharatiya Janata Party, West Bengal’s main Opposition, has raised concerns about fake voters in the list. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari claimed that nearly 1 crore fake voters could be deleted after SIR.
The Election Commission of India will publish the draft electoral roll on December 9. A separate list of dead, duplicate, untraceable, and shifted voters as well as those who did not submit forms will follow. After this, voters can submit Forms 6, 7, and 8 for new enrolment, deletion, and corrections. CEO Manoj Kumar Agarwal said, “For those who will apply online, the Election Commission has made the use of Aadhar-based e-sign mandatory.”
The Election Commission appointed retired IAS officer Subrata Gupta as observer for SIR to ensure no eligible voter is left out and no ineligible person is included. Twelve IAS officers are overseeing the revision across 24 districts.
Following protests and alleged security issues, the CEO’s office is being relocated with Kolkata Police ensuring security at both existing and new offices.
