The UAE has upgraded its Golden Visa program, adding a unique category for superyacht owners and maritime leaders. The program now grants 10-year residence permits to superyacht owners with vessels 40 meters or longer, CEOs and shareholders of yacht builders, yacht service providers, and maritime executives. Family members also qualify for visas of equal length. Launched in December 2024 through Abu Dhabi’s Golden Quay to Abu Dhabi initiative, and reinforced in 2025 by Dubai’s own Superyacht Golden Visa at the Dubai International Boat Show, the program aims to attract ultra-wealthy yacht owners to register and base their vessels locally. Benefits include no personal income or capital gains tax, freedom to live and work in the UAE without a local sponsor, family sponsorship options, and easy travel in GCC countries and beyond. The Golden Visa supports UAE’s goal to grow its marine economy, diversify away from oil, and compete as a luxury yachting destination alongside Monaco and Miami. Ownership costs and responsibilities are high. Superyachts typically cost $5 million or more, with annual maintenance, crew salaries, insurance, and marina fees adding substantial expenses. Application routes vary: Abu Dhabi uses a nomination system through Yas Marina and Abu Dhabi Investment Office, while Dubai accepts direct applications via GDRFA-Dubai and ICP portals. Documentation must prove yacht ownership, size, UAE links, and include relevant personal papers for family sponsorship. Dubai Ports World Chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem said, “This initiative strengthens Dubai’s position as a leader in global luxury yachting.” The UAE’s long coastlines, favorable climate, and state-of-the-art marinas make it a top choice for superyacht owners seeking residence and business opportunities. The superyacht Golden Visa is a residency program, not citizenship. It marks a new chapter for the UAE’s Golden Visa, transforming it into one of the world’s most inclusive and prestigious residency schemes that rewards talent, investment, and high-net-worth individuals.
