In Coimbatore, a Nilgiris Tahr Interpretation Centre will be built on five cents of land next to Semmozhi Poonga inside the Central Prison compound. This centre aims to share information on the Nilgiris Tahr’s lifestyle and conservation efforts.
Last year, a survey found 1,031 Nilgiris Tahr in Tamil Nadu across 13 routes and 140 places. This year, the second census covered 14 habitats and 175 places, spotting 1,303 Nilgiris Tahr. This shows an increase of 272 animals.
Anamalai Grass Hills recorded the highest number, 334 Nilgiris Tahr. In Kerala, 1,352 Nilgiris Tahr were counted. Together, Tamil Nadu and Kerala have 2,655 Nilgiris Tahr.
In Coimbatore Forest Division, the Madukkarai and Booluvampatti ranges hold a significant population. The Nilgiris Tahr live in spots like Chinnattu Malai, Periyattumalai, Kunjiranmudi, Kurudi Malai, and Velliangiri hills. The latest census showed a maximum of nine Nilgiris Tahr in the area.
Experts say controlling exotic species and creating grassland sholas is vital for the Tahr’s growth. Six sites have been chosen to develop these grassland areas to help the population grow further.
