The Solapur Division of Central Railway has started a new direct train service for silk cocoons from Pandharpur (Maharashtra) and Kalaburagi (Karnataka) to Ramanagara, the largest silk cocoon market in Asia. The service began on November 27, offering farmers a faster and cheaper way to send their silk cocoons to market. Earlier, silk cocoons could not be booked on trains passing through Ramanagara because the stops were too short for loading and unloading. To fix this, Central Railway and South Western Railway worked together. Central Railway arranged easier loading and South Western Railway improved unloading. On the very first day, farmers from Pandharpur booked 38 bags weighing 1,500 kg. Rail transport costs less than ₹5 per kg. That is over 30% cheaper than road transport. It also makes delivery faster and removes middlemen, giving farmers better prices. This success follows Amrit Samvad meetings where railway officials listened to farmer feedback and quickly solved problems. The Solapur Division is also known for fruit and sugar freight, and it plans to grow more farmer-friendly railway services. The daily Gol Gumbaz Express (Train No. 16536) leaves Pandharpur at 1 p.m. and Solapur at 3:30 p.m. towards Ramanagara. The Basava Express (Train No. 17308) departs Solapur at 7:30 p.m. and Kalaburagi at 9:15 p.m. Farmers in these regions are encouraged to use the service to reach the Ramanagara market directly. This new rail connection is a major boost for silk farmers in Maharashtra and Karnataka, cutting costs and improving market access.
