Doctors Strike at Kozhikode Medical College Over Pay and Staffing Issues
November 29, 2025
Doctors at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode stopped outpatient (OP) services and theory classes for medical students on Saturday, November 29, 2025. This is part of an ongoing protest demanding better conditions. T. Rosenara Begum, State president of the Kerala Government Medical College Teachers’ Association (KGMCTA), led a protest outside the Institute of Maternal and Child Health.
The KGMCTA announced they will continue the protest and boycott all medical board meetings starting December 1. They previously protested on October 20 and 28, and November 5, 13, and 21.
Patients who came for treatment faced problems as many clinics were closed. Doctors said fewer people sought treatment during the strike. Postgraduate students and house surgeons handled emergency and inpatient care, which were not affected by the strike.
The KGMCTA said many young doctors leave government jobs due to low starting pay. Current staff feel burdened because no new posts are created and no fresh hires happen, despite rising patient numbers. Also, doctors are transferred from old medical colleges to new ones to meet National Medical Commission rules.
The strike reflects growing concerns over pay, staffing, and workload in government hospitals.
