November 29, 2025
Cyclone Ditwah caused heavy rains and flooding in south coastal and delta districts of Tamil Nadu from Friday night, November 28, 2025. Residential areas were flooded, standing paddy crops damaged, and salt pans submerged as the cyclone moved towards north Tamil Nadu coast. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said heavy rain will mostly hit northern Tamil Nadu on Sunday, November 30, before easing from Monday, December 1. Chennai and surrounding areas got intermittent rain from Saturday afternoon.
The cyclone moved at 10 kmph over the Bay of Bengal near north Sri Lanka, about 350 km south of Chennai on Saturday evening. It will come within 50 km of the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast by early Sunday and closer to 25 km by evening. According to B. Amudha, head of RMC, the cyclone will move parallel to Tamil Nadu coast and weaken into a depression by Sunday evening near Chennai. No landfall is expected.
Delta districts faced severe impact. Heavy rain flooded large paddy fields in Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and Mayiladuthurai, affecting young crops. Kodiayakarai in Nagapattinam received 25 cm of rain in 24 hours, followed by 19 cm in Vedaranyam. Around 22,000 hectares of standing paddy crops in Nagapattinam are underwater. Salt pans along Vedaranyam and Kodiyakarai coasts were also flooded.
Tiruvarur Collector V. Mohanachandran said flooding occurred in four low-lying blocks including Thiruthuraipoondi and Nannilam. The crops were 20-25 days old, and officials are monitoring closely.
Rameswaram in Ramanathapuram district saw severe flooding, with residents stranded in areas like Gandhi Nagar and Natarajapuram. Some trains from Rameswaram were partially or fully cancelled. Fishing vessels stayed anchored as fishermen avoided sea operations. Ramanathapuram District Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon visited relief centers to check facilities.
In Chennai, water release from reservoirs increased after an orange alert for heavy rain. Flood warnings were issued for downstream areas including Chembarambakkam reservoir. A red alert was issued for very heavy rainfall in Tiruvallur and Ranipet districts on Sunday.
