Several Arrested in Lower Manhattan Protests Over Possible ICE Immigration Raid
November 30, 2025
Several protesters were arrested in Lower Manhattan on Saturday outside a government parking garage. They were protesting possible Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions nearby, said the New York Police Department (NYPD). The protest took place at Centre and Hester Streets, on Chinatown's edge. There, dozens of federal agents gathered, fueling fears of an immigration raid.
Demonstrators blocked streets and shouted “ICE out of New York,” at times stopping a van from leaving the garage, according to ABC News. NYPD officers warned the crowd multiple times to disperse. When protesters refused, police arrested multiple people, though exact numbers and charges were not immediately released.
The New York Times reported the protest began just after 11 am, with activists forming a barricade at the garage entrance. They piled rubbish bags and confronted federal agents from U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Homeland Security. Nearly 200 protesters gathered by early afternoon, chanting at the agents inside.
Police tried to separate the groups and set up barricades. But after 1:15 pm, tensions rose as federal vehicles attempted to leave. Protesters chased the convoy down Canal Street, throwing planters and bins. A masked federal agent was seen spraying something from a vehicle window. The NYPD and protesters clashed again during the drive-off.
Requests for comment from the Department of Homeland Security about any planned operation were not answered.
This clash follows a large federal enforcement action in the same area a month ago. That raid led to nine arrests. According to local congressman Dan Goldman, four U.S. citizens detained then were held almost 24 hours without charges.
These events come amid rising expectations of tougher immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump and increased concern among New York officials about future raids.
