Vehicles continue to be parked on pavements and along Khader Nawaz Khan (KNK) Road due to a lack of proper parking, causing congestion. The road was recently relaid, but some new paver blocks are damaged or dug up for utility work. Residents say illegal parking and encroachments shrink the available road space. Work on the road by Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) started in 2023 but is still not complete. Mahesh Reddy, a Haddows Road resident, said, “People have raised compound walls close to the KNK Road, which also decreases the carriageway width. This does not shrink the road drastically, but, with increased pedestrian walkway size, rampant illegal roadside parking — the carriageway reduction seems significant.” He added that nearby construction of Chennai Metro Rail worsens lane congestion and no designated parking is ready yet. Autorickshaw driver Thameem said, “Neither the police, nor the Chennai Corporation have taken action to curb roadside parking.” He also pointed out that tea shops encroach on pavements and many roads leading to the local hospital and GCC park have potholes, making walking difficult. On Saturday, workers were seen digging parts of the pavement for stormwater drain work. In May 2024, Chennai Corporation proposed building a multilevel parking facility on KNK Road. A Special Projects wing official said, “Corporation officials will coordinate with the police to control parking on pavements. At least 150 vehicles drive through this lane to get to TVS Motor Company. Since there is a major hospital facility as well here, apart from commercial spaces, there is more congestion. This is expected to ease once Metro Rail work is over.” The official added, “At present, there is not enough space, and in places where land is available, there are complications due to existing services such as drains. There are also challenges in bringing in private operators under the public–private partnership model. We are currently identifying other land pockets, including areas near Uthamar Gandhi Salai.” Regarding encroachments, a request has been sent to the Land and Revenue Departments to check patta details. The official said, “This matter is under examination.”
