Kerala Suspends DySP Umesh A. Over Serious Sexual Exploitation Charges
November 30, 2025
Kerala’s government suspended DySP Umesh A. of Vadakara immediately on November 30, 2025. The move came after serious allegations of sexual exploitation, abuse of authority, and misconduct surfaced during the probe into Police Officer Binu Thomas’ death. Binu Thomas, the SHO of Cherpulassery police station, was found dead on November 15. Investigators found a 32-page suicide note. It revealed claims dating to 2014 when Thomas was Sub Inspector at Wadakkancherry and Umesh was Circle Inspector there. The note said a woman held on April 24, 2014, for immoral trafficking was released without charges. It alleged that Umesh and Thomas then visited her home, exploited and intimidated her, and took bribes from trafficking suspects. Thomas also reportedly had an illicit relationship with this woman later. The DySP of Palakkad’s C-Branch recorded the woman’s statement. She confirmed the abuse and exploitation by both officers. The Home Department, after reviewing the Police Chief Ravada A. Chandrasekhar’s report, found prima facie evidence of major misconduct, abuse of power, and immoral acts by Umesh. The department said Umesh’s acts “tarnished the image of the entire police force” and required urgent action. Umesh is now suspended pending disciplinary inquiry but will get subsistence allowance as per rules. An oral inquiry is underway, and the Police Chief will select officers to handle the case. The government provided helpline numbers to support those facing suicidal thoughts: State health helpline 104, Sneha Suicide Prevention Helpline 0484-2540530, Thanal Centre 0495-2760000, and DISHA 1056.
