Lakshadweep and Andaman Nicobar Populations Set to Rise by 2051: IIMAD Report
November 30, 2025
A new report by the International Institute of Migration and Development (IIMAD) and the Population Foundation of India predicts population growth for India’s island territories. Lakshadweep’s population is expected to grow from 67,642 in 2016 to 74,194 by 2051, a rise of 9.68%. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands will see their population increase from 3,98,310 to 4,21,135, up 5.73%. The report titled "Unravelling India’s Demographic Future: Population Projections for States and Union Territories 2021-2051" was led by S. Irudaya Rajan and J. Retnakumar from IIMAD.
Because population growth rates in smaller islands are irregular and incomplete in government data, the report uses curve fitting and logistic mathematical methods for projections. The gender split shows that Lakshadweep’s male population will rise from 34,716 to 37,785, and females from 32,926 to 36,319 by 2051. In Andaman and Nicobar, males will increase from 2,13,467 to 2,26,139, and females from 1,84,843 to 1,94,996.
The forecasts are based on data from India’s Census, Sample Registration System, National Family Health Survey, Civil Registration System, and National Sample Survey. This detailed projection provides a clear picture of demographic changes in these strategic island territories by mid-century.
