Heavy Rain from Cyclone Ditwah Floods Karaikal, Water Enters 240 Houses in Thirunagar
November 30, 2025
Life stopped in Karaikal on Saturday as rain from Cyclone Ditwah caused widespread flooding. Low-lying areas got waterlogged, flooding houses and public spaces. Vehicle movement slowed down across the region. Karaikal Surya, an activist, said to The Hindu, "In Thirunagar alone, water entered 240 houses, damaging household items. Only after the water fully drains will the extent of loss become clear." Nedungadu commune’s villages, such as Andoor and Ponpethi, reported large water stagnation. Residents expect water to drain in at least two days. Waterlogging remained in T.R. Pattinam’s Vazhamangalam and Kizhavoor villages. Neravy’s Kizhamaai and Oozhiyapathu villages faced similar troubles with stagnant water in lanes. In Thirunallar, Ambedkar Nagar, which lacks proper roads and drainage, was hit hardest. Other villages like Nal Ezhunthur were also affected. Kottucherry’s Sonia Gandhi Nagar experienced continuous waterlogging after overnight rain. Fishermen’s settlements like Karaikal Medu and Kilinjal Medu saw water stagnation mainly disrupting schools. Akkampettai’s playground flooded, blocking access. Activist A. Vincent noted another problem after water receded: "In many villages, the water has gone down, but a thick layer of silt has been left behind." V.S. Nagar in T.R. Pattinam had six houses covered with mud after floods. Nallathur in Nedungadu saw similar damage. District officials said community halls were opened to help. Work continues to drain floodwater from all affected areas.
