Bengaluru: Just days after a raid at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison seized nearly 20 mobile phones, fresh surprise inspections on Wednesday and Thursday led to the recovery of 52 more mobile phones, 38 SIM cards, chargers, earphones, sharp knives, cash, and other banned items from various prison barracks. Following viral reports of irregularities inside the prison, Karnataka's Home Minister formed a high-powered committee on November 11, led by Additional Director-General of Police R. Hitendra, to review prison administration and security. The committee has started its probe. Several prison officials were suspended due to alleged irregularities, and new leadership has taken charge. Most earlier raids were conducted by the city police, but recent inspections leading to the latest seizures were carried out by the Department of Prisons and Correctional Services. Prison Superintendent Parameshwar H.S. has lodged his third complaint with Parappana Agrahara Police, demanding a probe into the source of these banned items. Earlier complaints led to FIRs after two raids recovered 4 and 15 mobile phones respectively. Officials say these recoveries expose serious security failures. "The mobile phones indicate lapses in the multi-layered security cover and pose challenges to law and order in and around the city," said a senior official. The seizures also cast doubt on the effectiveness of the advanced mobile jammers installed in the prison, which were meant to stop mobile phone use and reduce disturbances for nearby residents. The ongoing raids highlight the urgent need to fix security in one of Karnataka's most sensitive prison facilities.
