The Election Commission of India (ECI) has extended the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in nine States and three Union Territories by seven days. The extension was announced on November 30, 2025. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders said the ECI's move admits its mistake. Senior West Bengal Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya and MP Partha Bhowmick said the SIR was hurried and stressful. "From the Trinamool Congress, we have been repeatedly saying that the time given by the EC for SIR is not sufficient. Earlier it took two years, a process which they [EC] were trying to complete in two months," Bhattacharya said. TMC also demanded an apology from the ECI for the deaths reported during the SIR process. "40 people have lost their lives, they were all from West Bengal. What is the answer of EC to these deaths? Who will take this responsibility," Bhattacharya asked. The deaths include Booth Level Officers (BLOs), whom TMC blames on the rushed exercise. Earlier, a TMC delegation raised five questions to ECI officials in New Delhi, including about these deaths. On the other hand, Union Minister and BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar said the extension is the ECI's discretion. West Bengal Congress criticized the short extension and demanded one month instead. CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty accused BJP and TMC of having a "tacit understanding" over the SIR process, suggesting the political posturing is only for public show. To monitor the SIR process, the ECI appointed 13 special observers in the State. Retired IAS officer Subrata Gupta, Special Roll Observer, visited South 24 Parganas district on November 30 to review progress. "I am here to oversee whether the SIR process is being followed as per the directive of the ECI. There are a few complaints, and we will cross-check them," he said.
