May 30, 2025

The University of New Mexico's Global Education Office (UNM GEO) joined forces with Graduate Studies and the Anderson School of Management on a recruitment venture to Nepal and India, including New Delhi, in April. During the 13-day trip, the team visited universities in both countries, meeting with key academic figures to discuss student mobility, research collaborations, and academic needs. Michael Voegerl, the director of international admissions and recruitment at GEO, emphasized the importance of personal connections in attracting students to UNM. The team, comprising Voegerl, recent graduate Madeline Pennington from Anderson School of Management, and faculty member Bill Gannon, interacted with over 400 students, discussing various aspects of studying at UNM. Sarah Townsend, the Graduate Studies faculty fellow for strategic recruitment, highlighted the university's commitment to attracting a diverse range of students. Faculty member Bill Gannon addressed concerns regarding the visa process, fees, and student life, while Pennington shared insights into the application process and faculty expectations. The team plans to revisit Asia for further recruitment efforts and aims to offer 'Master Classes' to showcase the UNM classroom experience. Despite concerns about visa processes, the students expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of studying at UNM. The trip was marked by engaging discussions with students about their educational aspirations and interests, reflecting the university's dedication to providing global students with top-tier education opportunities.
