The Indigenous Peoples' Party of Tripura (IPFT), a key ally of the BJP-led government in Tripura, announced it will continue as a separate political party to fight upcoming elections. IPFT President Prem Kumar Reang spoke on December 1, 2025, after a Central Working Committee meeting. The statement came after the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) held a 'One North East' rally aiming to unite regional parties of the Northeast. Despite this, IPFT decided not to merge or lose its political identity. "We had floated IPFT with a mission to achieve Tipraland in 2009. In 2021, TMP promised Greater Tipraland. We were invited to join the 'One North East' rally on November 27. But after our meeting on November 30, we resolved that the party will continue to maintain a separate political entity," Mr. Reang said. He added the party is open to contesting the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections jointly with BJP and TMP. "We will seek seats proportionate to our strength. Even if there is no alliance, we will contest," he said. The TTAADC elections are scheduled for April 2026. Mr. Reang also announced a day-long sit-in in Delhi during the Winter Parliament session. This protest aims to push for the passage of the 125th Constitution Amendment Bill, which would empower the tribal council. He said, "The Tripura Assembly already passed a resolution to rename TTAADC as Tipra Territorial Council and increase seats from 30 to 50. The State Government also seeks the Bill's passage. We demand the Bill be passed in the current session."
