Tamil Nadu Launches TN 100 Chip Varsity to Boost Semiconductor Design in Colleges
December 1, 2025
Tamil Nadu is set to strengthen its semiconductor ecosystem with the launch of the TN 100 Chip Varsity programme. Guidance Tamil Nadu and iVP Semi joined hands to build a statewide network of chip design labs in engineering colleges. This initiative aims to create 100 new chip designs and train 5,000 students annually in advanced semiconductor skills.
An MoU was signed at the TN Rising Coimbatore conclave in the presence of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. P. Raja Manickam, CEO of iVP Semi, said, "We will help in establishing chip design labs across academic institutions in Tamil Nadu. We will give them certain products to design. And in the next five years, more than 1,000 products will come out of colleges and universities in the State."
The programme will select and equip colleges with industry-level tools, curricula, and mentorship from global experts. This hands-on chip development exposure aims to build a future-ready semiconductor workforce and grow Tamil Nadu's talent pool.
Some colleges like SRM Institute of Science and Technology have already been chosen and received chips for training. iVP Semi plans to provide 2-3 chips per college involved.
Tamil Nadu is making a big push to capture a large share of the semiconductor market. In August 2025, it sanctioned the Semiconductor Design Promotion Scheme under its ₹500-crore Tamil Nadu Semiconductor Mission 2030. The State is also working on Centres of Excellence to support chip design, testing, and validation.
