Trump Ends Temporary Protected Status for Somalis, ICE Urges Self-Deportation
December 1, 2025
President Donald Trump has ended the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program for Somalis in the US. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency said Somalis are now considered illegal and should self-deport before detention. "When someone's temporary protected status is lifted, they become illegal aliens who aren't allowed to live or work in the US," ICE stated. The US also ended TPS for Myanmar recently. Trump had promised to crack down on Somalis in Minnesota, calling the state a "hub of fraudulent money laundering activity" under Governor Tim Walz. On November 21, Trump announced on Truth Social: "Somali gangs are terrorizing the people of that great State, and BILLIONS of Dollars are missing." He declared, "I am, as President of the United States, hereby terminating, effective immediately, the Temporary Protected Status (TPS Program) for Somalis in Minnesota." The TPS for Somalis started in September 1991 under President George HW Bush and protects foreign-born people who cannot safely return home due to war or disasters. Besides Somalia and Myanmar, Trump also ended TPS for Venezuela and Nicaragua. Minnesota hosts the largest Somali population in the US with over 61,000 people. The fraud claims relate to a $300 million scheme linked to Feeding Our Future, a nonprofit connected to the Somali community. After a shooting in DC, Trump ordered a review of Green Cards from 19 countries including Somalia and paused migration from 'third-world' countries.
