Kerala’s South Zone Organ Donation Officer Resigns After Facebook Controversy
December 1, 2025
Kerala’s south zone nodal officer for Mrithasanjeevani, Dr. M.K. Mohandas, quit on Monday. He posted on Facebook that "free speech was his constitutional right" and said he resigned due to personal reasons. In August, Dr. Mohandas criticised Mrithasanjeevani and the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organisation (K-SOTTO) on Facebook. He blamed K-SOTTO's inefficient functioning for poor organ donation rates. The Principal of Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, issued a censure notice to him. Dr. Mohandas was warned that as a government employee, he could not criticise the government on social media. He withdrew his post and apologised. Reports say he quit after the Additional Chief Secretary (Health) sent a memo asking for an explanation about his comments that allegedly showed the government in a bad light. Dr. Mohandas had been the south zone nodal officer since May 2024. He covered four districts: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, and Pathanamthitta. His job was to improve deceased donor organ donations by working with medical departments and hospitals. According to an official statement by Noble Gracious, Executive Director of K-SOTTO, the government has started disciplinary action against Dr. Mohandas. He criticised Dr. Mohandas for damaging K-SOTTO's image on social media when he should have promoted organ donation. Only one deceased donor organ donation happened under his coordination in Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. Noble Gracious also said if Dr. Mohandas resigned for personal reasons, he should have informed the Director of Medical Education instead of announcing it on Facebook.
