Despite claims of full readiness in Erumely to handle pilgrim crowds, many pilgrims complain about being overcharged. This temple town, a key stop before Sabarimala, sees high fees that break rules. Authorities say only Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) approved rates are allowed. However, private parking lots and even some TDB auctioned grounds demand much more. A revenue official said, "At TDB-run parking grounds, the prescribed tariffs are prominently displayed, but most private facilities lack such transparency. Although the official fee for car parking is ₹40, many private operators continue to collect ₹100. Inspections have begun to end this practice." Toilet fees also go beyond the set rates despite warnings by the panchayat to follow TDB charges. Contractors claim their extra fees cover additional services. Outside groups have protested fierce exploitation. Tensions rose when the Revenue Inspection Team did not fine a contractor accused of overcharging. Complaints say parking fees are taken from vehicles immediately on arrival, though rules say charges apply only after parking. Further claims show contractors giving basic receipts to Kerala pilgrims but e-POS bills to visitors from other states. Hindu organizations presented both receipts, pointing out those in the Devaswom Board’s name lack official seals. At one TDB parking lot, fees are ₹150 for cars and ₹200 for buses—much higher than allowed. Pilgrims and Hindu groups want strict action to fix these unfair charges.
