Heavy Rain Hits Chennai and Nearby Districts as Deep Depression Lingers

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has forecast heavy rain for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts on Tuesday, December 2. This is caused by a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coasts of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh. The system is a remnant of Cyclone Ditwah. It is moving slowly northwards, close to the north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coasts. It is expected to keep its intensity for the next six hours, then weaken over the following 12 hours into a depression.
As of 5:30 pm on Monday, the deep depression was about 50 km east of Chennai and around 35 km from the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast. The system caused heavy rain in Chennai and nearby districts on Monday, leading to waterlogging and traffic jams. Several locations in Tiruvallur district recorded heavy rainfall: Redhills 161 mm, Puzhal 129 mm, Ponneri 125 mm, Cholavaram 117 mm, and Gummidipoondi 94 mm.
In Kancheepuram district, Hindustan University saw 46.5 mm of rain. Chennai district also experienced heavy showers: Nungambakkam got 94.6 mm, Ennore Port 111 mm, YMCA Nandanam 78.5 mm, and Anna University 72.5 mm. Authorities urge residents to stay cautious as the rain continues.
