Madhya Pradesh Assembly Session Opens with BJP-Congress Clash Over Child Deaths and Farmer Issues
December 2, 2025
The Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly's Winter Session started on December 1, 2025, with sharp words between the ruling BJP and Opposition Congress. The fight centered around recent tragedies where many children died in the state. Congress Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar protested that the government did not include the deaths from the cough syrup tragedy, which killed 26 children in Chhindwara and nearby areas, in their condolence list. He said, “Has the government lost its humanity?” Singhar also mentioned two children bitten by rats at Indore’s state-run hospital, demanding higher compensation for victims' families.
BJP Cabinet Minister Vishwas Sarang criticized Singhar for breaking House rules by talking about issues beyond the agenda. This sparked a heated debate between the parties.
Before the session began, Congress MLAs protested by carrying dummy infants. MLA Sena Patel wore a demon costume and a garland made of cough syrup bottles to highlight the crisis. Congress blamed the government for short legislative sessions and accused it of trying to weaken the role of lawmakers. MLA Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat said, “What’s the point of a 3-day or 4-day session? Why does the government want to run away from the House?”
The session is scheduled to last four days until December 5, with a holiday on December 3 marking the 41st anniversary of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy. Other discussion points included compensation for farmers affected by heavy rains, price difference payouts under the Bhavantar Scheme for soybean farmers, and fertilizer shortages at distribution centers.
